okay this is gonna be the most backwards explanation for how and why this happened.
First off, I play a stupid, playing a stupid immune to Shinnosuke was a funny idea to me. Then later on... I said okay to Higekiri being a bandit! Things happened and he was ready to die? He tried to game the bandit game even if it meant dying because there's nothing about that and god, he went from 0-100 and it's like, sure ThisIsFine.png. (i apologize to all of the future bandits). But Shinnosuke was pretty nice to him before he died and he clung to it because Wow they shared something in common? Like how did that happen but HE REALLY LIKED SHINNOSUKE STILL. Also in stupid bread fashion he decided tossing letters at him would be the best idea to show he cared. Even if it killed Shinnosuke on the inside.
I've actually played Imanotsurugi for longer, and I'm more familiar with his side of things as far as ridiculous fanon/Genji family soap opera history relationships go. It's a... triangle. Imanotsurugi loves Hizamaru (same master and Hizamaru is based off of said master Yoshitsune), Hizamaru loves Higekiri (Yoshitsune adored his brother Yoritomo, who's Higekiri's master)... and no one can decide how Higekiri feels about Ima (canonically Higekiri doesn't care about the Genji family drama and says as such) but Ima has like 1000 reasons historically to dislike Higekiri (Yoritomo hit the fucking betray button and forced Yoshitsune to commit suicide fwiw). I just went with Higekiri being aware and seemingly not caring because uh... there's a thing to justify this stupid vagueness, fuck this canon where it counts. But I played the oblivious "bad guy" because why not... he can totally die and it's cool.
This goes back to Higekiri being teetering on that fine line of obliviousness/no fucks given for anything serious, he's sheltered but also the old sword of a... bad guy. That is how this friendship(?) happened. But he never stopped insisting the idea the tsun edgelord was good in his head... Also Hizamaru is similar and can be rude to anyone who isn't Higekiri so it's fun to be on the other side. So yes, there was logic to trying, maybe. THANKS YUNA AND XION.
I WONT LIE, I WANTED TO STRETCH THE DUMB CHIP JOKE AS FAR AS I COULD OR YOU WOULD LET ME, IF THINGS WERE DIFFERENT.
But, he really liked Milla! They had a really serious bonding moment and it was their last until Milla finally died but I will hold that close to my RP heart... Anyway, he had a lot of respect for her! Like, yes he did a stupid thing and this was before Whole Ass became a bloodbath so people still had their morals and he was covering for a murderer... Sword logic says it's fine because he was doing it for things he cared about and as an agreement to Ezio who didn't want to kill an innocent person, that includes execution. Higekiri logic wanted to say he didn't give a damn, he can be a bad guy if it was for something he cared about, as the sowrd of a historical "bad guy". He won in a way, even if he was the villainous victim of the week until trials got progressively worse at finding... bad guys...
But! Not being scolded for it while waiting for death and Milla comforting him in a Tales-y protag way was something he appreciated! Also the mutual understanding of how unconventional standards humans hold to are ridiculous, while also loving them... The reason his first letter was weird and goddamn potatoes was because she accepted his sacrifice and Milla does what a Milla does, there isn't much point to writing something to say he regretted it or give her encouragement (that gets censored, too), she'd be fiiine. His second letter just got weird because he was trying to convey the "you have to die" part while congratulating her? Then they reunited and ate sushi. It was good. If he lived, he'd probably just chat her up on silly observations of humanity and How To not Break in Spirit.
okay we already know that they're stupid bread, but she really did break him out playing bandit stupid that trial, SHE DESERVES A MEDAL FOR THAT. But she's so sweet and he cherished the brief time he spent with her, doing cute things. His criteria for "a good person he likes to chat with" isn't a high bar to get over, but Yuna probably did a triple backflip over it in Higekiri's book. She's just a super good person and he's seen a Lot. Sword Grandpa and stuff. Her spending time with him in jail (also not judging his bandit scapegoat ass) and heeding her request is just the icing on the cake. We didn't thread it but I imagine he like, gave a huge hug when it came through in the mail.

Ugh... Child with no emotion and a lot of guilt, you need a good family, a home, and good things!
Even for this old sword, Russell probably came across as... strange? He did't see the girl on fire thing coming, nope. But still, Russell is well-meaning, and that's what counts. No matter the mysterious content that is Russell's head, he didn't stop trying to understand it out of curiosity/hopefulness and vice versa, which actually supported something good for them both. Maybe that's almost friendship? He'd say it is.
Higekiri is weird and knows it, Papika is kinda weird and embraces it, so there's a commonality thing where he just rolls with what she says and he finds her fun to chat or hang around with? Someone who says what's on their mind whatever it is, that's refreshing for a simple old guy. If he wasn't a bandit they'd probably hang out lying on the floor together and call the sheriff stupid. Also, because he's used to the company of devoted people towards a person... it's a sword thing in other swords and it's in his brother... he totally finds it endearing, and thus Papika is endearing!
