Even for this old sword, Russell probably came across as... strange? He did't see the girl on fire thing coming, nope. But still, Russell is well-meaning, and that's what counts. No matter the mysterious content that is Russell's head, he didn't stop trying to understand it out of curiosity/hopefulness and vice versa, which actually supported something good for them both. Maybe that's almost friendship? He'd say it is.
