The message comes by carrier pigeon actually, which is a pretty weird way to deliver a message but of course, it's thematic. A very pretty looking brown pigeon swoops down out of the sky to wherever Percy and Nisha just so happen to be that afternoon and holds out its leg. The message is short and simple:
Got a job for you. Meet me in front of the mine shaft at dusk. No show, no job. Keep it a secret, rewarded very well.
- Hal
P.S. Burn this.
Except Percy's note in particular has an addiction:
Don't tell your girlfriend, kid. I'll disqualify you both and you won't be able to win your way back home.
And that's it. Of course, if they choose to listen to the message, they'll find the Sheriff in front of the mines at dusk. They'll be greeted with a tip of his hat and one word:
"Miners."
And then he holds out two small notebooks. Looks like they've been chosen for one of those roles that were mentioned. Good luck.
Well, yeah. I mean, I didn't really think about it but then Annabeth asked me if she could watch y'all so I was like, why not? And I let them have a bunch of TVs.
Yeah, it is. Hal, please. [He actually sounds a little desperate? Please forgive him for being fleshy and more mortal than usual.] I'll do this for you, but please don't let her see this. I don't care what you do, blow out the TVs on Thursday, something, but please don't let her see me do this.
That, and the name of her killer. I'll take care of the rest. I'll figure it out, just no going back on that. Please. [He knows Hal already agreed but can you blame him for not trusting anyone anymore?]
Ain't gotta tell them anything. Not gonna pin it on you, no worries. It'd be more interesting to voice it anyway and it ain't gonna help 'em in any fashion. Not really.
They're going to ask why, Hal. Humans always ask why.
But I guess you could say it's because you feel sorry for us. [He's still paranoid, sorry.] A consolation prize for failing to catch murderers week after week.
...people know I've been speaking to you, too. Using my trial merit and getting Diego's horse out of my room to get information for the Bounty party. Which...I guess you probably already know.
[A huff.] This your way of saying to stop worrying about it?
Hal. My life has been meddled in way too many ways for me to not think of everything. Plus you've met my girlfriend. Think about that.
[But.] ...Thursday then. I'll do it. You block the view for the dead, I'll do it, you give me the name, and we'll see how Saturday goes while not revealing any of my involvement in any of this.
[A pause.] After this though...I'd like to negotiate again. If I do a good enough job.
[And that's all he says before he nods his head.] Thanks, Sheriff. [Jackson OUT.]

…the people who're dead. They can see us, right? Can they see what happens on Thursday nights?

[ wtf sheriff ]
Ain't allowed to tell you anything though.

I don't want to know anything. I'll write to her myself, but I just...don't want her to see me do this. Is there any way to block that out?

If that's your request, yes. That's fine.

She won't see it, Percy. If she ain't meant to see it, which as of now she is not -- she won't see it.
[ But! ]
I can do you one better. Saturday, start of the trial, I announce it to the room at large. Then everyone knows who killed her. No hiding from it.

[...but. That's interesting.]
As much as I would really like that, they're going to ask you why you're announcing it. What will you tell them?

[ But still, he gives a nod when Percy finally asks the last part, sighing again. ]
Yeah, it is. This is all way more simple than you make it out to be.
