The message comes by carrier pigeon actually, which is a pretty weird way to deliver a message but of course, it's thematic. A very pretty looking brown pigeon swoops down out of the sky to wherever Percy and Nisha just so happen to be that afternoon and holds out its leg. The message is short and simple:
Got a job for you. Meet me in front of the mine shaft at dusk. No show, no job. Keep it a secret, rewarded very well.
- Hal
P.S. Burn this.
Except Percy's note in particular has an addiction:
Don't tell your girlfriend, kid. I'll disqualify you both and you won't be able to win your way back home.
And that's it. Of course, if they choose to listen to the message, they'll find the Sheriff in front of the mines at dusk. They'll be greeted with a tip of his hat and one word:
"Miners."
And then he holds out two small notebooks. Looks like they've been chosen for one of those roles that were mentioned. Good luck.
[Why…is there a bird. He tries to ignore the bird, and Mrs. O'Leary woofs at it, growling slightly but when it persists and Percy notices a note he takes a look.
The message itself was easy to ignore except for the additional note. It's unnerving. The Sheriff knows what to say to push his buttons and Percy, naturally, take it as a threat. His first instinct was to tell Annabeth but he's alone when he receives the note and it gives him time to think. He doesn't want to think about what "disqualify" is, and…he promised. He promised himself he'd keep her safe even if he knows Annabeth can handle herself. They both need to get back.
So…he shows up. He glares at the Sheriff when he walks up to the mines, Annabeth-less and dog-less, and he doesn't return the greeting. He takes the notebook and starts to scan it, taking his time to get the words to focus.]
You're kidding. [Yeah he's. Not happy. The fuck, man. But at the same time, he's glancing at Nisha for her opinion on the matter.]
[ Nisha, on the other hand, was eager to receive the message. Carrier pigeon is a little more out of the ordinary than a bounty board, but not weirder than some other things, and the rest of it seems reasonable. There's not really any question whether she's going to accept the invitation.
The first thing that really surprises her is when Percy is there too. He doesn't look like the kind of partner she'd expect for a job.
She still grins when she reads over the notebook, though, making no attempt to hide her pleasure. ]
[ At the very contrasting reactions, the Sheriff just sort of smiles and has to close his eyes for a minute to savor it. This probably isn't very reassuring of a reply but after a moment, he falls back into his usual disinterest. ]
Thought you both might say that. S'why I picked ya. You're free to answer any questions but uh, one of yous might wanna get the crowbar out of the shed over there. Maybe an axe and some hats for us. We gotta go down in the mines and the usual way ain't gonna work right now.
[ There's no one to kill yet, but Nisha kind of wants to know that things won't go to shit when that does happen. So she catches Percy at some point early in the week. ]
[Since the Sheriff first told them about their part in this game, Percy has had time to think it through. Talk to people. Really understand what the deal is. Overall he knew he had to play along and keep his mouth shut and listen to the Sheriff for a while. It's why when Nisha flags him down he listens, making sure to time it so that no one will notice he's gone.
Nisha of course gets there first and when he shows up he's alone once more, no dog following. He's a little more serious that last time, but he lifts a hand in greeting.]
Hey. No word from the Sheriff yet, unless he told you something else? [Its no secret the Sheriff thinks Percy's kind of a dumbass. He'll have to fix that.]
[ Sunday night, Percy and Nisha get summoned by a pigeon. There's no letter attached but the it's presence is enough to signal that the Sheriff is beckoning them.
He'll be waiting outside of the station when they arrived, leaning against the beam of a porch and hands tucked into his belt loops as he chews on a piece of tobacco. He'll spit when they approach, nodding his head to them. ]
I got two bodies for ya this week. One a pop. Ocelot and Undertaker, ain't participating to my satisfaction. Y'all can choose which one you'd like.
[By now he knows what the pigeon means. He doesn't think anything of it and brushes off the bird's presence for a moment before he slips past everyone he knows. After the display this morning, he knows better than to blow off the Sheriff yet. So, he arrives to the Station and looks for Nisha first before looking at the Sheriff, listening to what he says.]
Oh. [...he struggles to think for a moment.] Not sure who Undertaker even is, so I can see why. [A pause. Then again, Undertaker sounds more his speed, more in line with the monsters he's destroyed before.] Unless Nisha has a preference, I guess I'll take him.
[He doesn't like the fact that he's agreeing to murdering someone he doesn't even know, but at the same time...the game. This will have to do until they figure out another route to end the game.]
[ Nisha, on the other hand, is grinning as soon as she shows up, and it only widens when the Sheriff speaks. She's been itching for some action, and this is basically a best-case scenario. ]
I would love to take Ocelot. Facing him down sounds like fun.
[He'll mosey his way over to the Sheriff's station and just sort of head on in, looking for the man in question. When he finds him, his face is pretty much the epitome of this.]
Did you put a fucking horse in my bedroom. [Hi, Sheriff Hal.]
[Like last week, Percy makes sure no one's really paying attention as he heads for the Sheriff's station, letting himself in and seeking out Hal. For once, he's not as annoyed or hostile as he usually is in these situations. Instead, he's thoughtful.]
...how are you?
[...what the fuck, Percy. (Sure, all right, this visit has purpose but that seemed like a nice thing to ask?)]
[Later, probably after his conversation with Hal and Barnham, Percy returns. This time Mrs. O'Leary is with him and when he enters again he's still quiet and somber.]
...in the end, you always knew this is what would happen, didn't you?
