The message comes by carrier pigeon actually, which is a pretty weird way to deliver a message but of course, it's thematic. A very pretty looking brown pigeon swoops down out of the sky to wherever Sara and Yuna just so happen to be that afternoon and holds out its leg.
The message Sara receives is short and simple:
Got a job for you. Meet me in front of the Saloon this evening. No show, no job. Keep it a secret, rewarded very well.

On the other hand, Yuna receives:
Picked you for a role. You said you wanted to help, this is one of the roles capable of ending the game earlier. Let's see what you do with it. Meet me in front of the Saloon this evening if you accept.

And that's it. Of course, if they both choose to listen to their messages, they'll find the Sheriff in front of the Saloon at dusk. They'll be greeted with a tip of his hat and a question:
"Y'all like talking to people, right?"
And then he holds out two small notebooks. Looks like they've been chosen for one of those roles that were mentioned. Good luck.
My employers ain't human and barely Sentient. Kinda exist outside of space and time, thus their ability to fuss with the universes. They grow bored and idle and every passing year, they host this competition because if they do not, if not enough blood is appropriately spilled in ways they desire, things are... off. They're unsatisfied and ain't really able to keep things as consistent anymore. This competition serves to quell their nature and sate their needs.
And this is supposed to make us care... why-- ah, wait, no.
[ SHAKING HER HEAD. ] It's not about us, it's about them being bored, and we can't go home without humoring them, right? Or taking them down, but if they're beyond space and time, I'm guessing that's not really an option.
Exactly. It's an indifference. The best you can do is play well and go home, and never remember this happened. That's why everything here exists in a pocket, outside of the universes you're part of.
