The message comes by carrier pigeon actually, which is a pretty weird way to deliver a message but of course, it's thematic. A very pretty looking brown pigeon swoops down out of the sky to wherever Milla just so happens to be that afternoon and holds out its leg. The message is short and simple:
Got a job for you. Meet me at the farm at dusk. No show, no job. Keep it a secret, rewarded very well.
- Hal
P.S. Burn this.
And that's it. Of course, if Milla chooses to listen to the message, she will find the Sheriff at the farm at dusk, chewing a piece of tobacco and watching the sun set. She'll be greeted with a tip of his hat and one word:
"Bounty."
And then he holds out a small notebook. Looks like Milla's been chosen for one of those roles that were mentioned. Good luck.
Dunno. Some of 'em I might be able to keep in limbo. Ain't really sure about all of them. Just wanted to give 'em someplace nice to wait out the rest of the game till everyone goes home. Best to just leave the train alone, in my opinion.
Think of it like -- [ He holds his hands up, spread wide as if there was a box between them. He gestures with his left hand. ]
How alive you are exists in a bit of a scale. This is life.
[ Then his right. ]
This is death.
[ He nods his chin towards the "death" hand. ]
Right now, because you're here and not home in your reality which is where you'd be 100% alive, you're a bit closer to the death end of things. Let's say half.
The people who die here, get closer to a full death. Not yet dead but not alive either. They can exist but only in a contained state even smaller than this town. Thus, the train.
If y'all break the place they're anchored too right now, they drift. Way of the universe states that if they're not particularly inclined either way, they'll drift into a full death. Since most of y'all always want to be either fully alive or fully dead, that's just your instinct. Who wants to live a half-life? No one. Sentients ain't made to function like that.
So, if the people who are dead right now aren't really gunning to be either alive or dead, they'll most likely just die fully. Ain't saving them from that. Just not strong enough to keep, you know?
Like whatshisname, the sword fella. He didn't really care if he was alive or dead. So, he'll probably just finally fully die. He's already at peace more than most of ya. Ain't anything to fight for now. He's got his reward, he's good.
[ He drops his hands then, tucking his fingers into his belt loops. ]
Yep. It's not something I say to the town because ain't everyone gonna agree with it or want to let it alone. They'll wanna test it which is some nonsense, really.
So, plain old train. Won't do anything to ya. Leave it alone.

Nah, feel free to poke. Sorta the point. If you don't poke, what's the point of ya? It's all yours to discover.
no subject
[she smiles, confident]
Because I intend to poke around as much as my brown nose will let me. Starting with the mines.
no subject
Good woman. That's precisely why I picked you for a Bounty.
no subject
Xion and I were also debating breaking the windows of the new train car.
[she says. casually]
I hope that won't cause any large problems.
no subject
It will. That's where the dead are.
no subject
It--
[she is actually speechless for a few moments, good job]
. . . what will happen to the dead if we break those windows?
no subject
Dunno. Some of 'em I might be able to keep in limbo. Ain't really sure about all of them. Just wanted to give 'em someplace nice to wait out the rest of the game till everyone goes home. Best to just leave the train alone, in my opinion.

And if you can't keep them in limbo. . . do they disappear and remain dead forever? Or do they return to life?
no subject

That make sense to ya?
no subject
[she corrects, not gently but not forcefully, either. the dead deserve to be remembered]
But I understand what you're saying. In that case. . . [breaking those train windows is probably a lot more risky than she originally thought]

So this is something I shouldn't tell the town as a whole.
[something she knows only because she's a bounty and she asked the right questions]

no subject
Noted.
I'll have to find something to tell Xion, then.
