The message comes by carrier pigeon actually, which is a pretty weird way to deliver a message but of course, it's thematic. A very pretty looking brown pigeon swoops down out of the sky to wherever Damian just so happens to be that afternoon and holds out its leg. The message is short and simple:
Got a job for you. Meet me at the farm at dusk. No show, no job. Keep it a secret, rewarded very well.
- Hal
P.S. Burn this.
And that's it. Of course, if Damian chooses to listen to the message, he will find the Sheriff at the farm at dusk, chewing a piece of tobacco and watching the sun set. He'll be greeted with a tip of his hat and one word:
"Bounty."
And then he holds out a small notebook. Looks like Damian's been chosen for one of those roles that were mentioned. Good luck.
I'm aware this place is in a pocket out of our-- [He pauses suddenly, brows pulling together. Wait.]
Time inside of his pocket is a factor available for altering? Are you serious? You can change time? But--not forward, not the future, because you are uncertain if this person will be permanently injured when I speak to them.
Or... they will be injured, you just don't know if I am going to speak to them at all? [God dammit, time.]
I know the moment they'll be hurt. I don't know if you'll be interfering in that moment or not since you haven't decided on it yet. That clear things up?
And theoretically, yeah. I don't though because that's interference. I know what happened. I know what's happening. I know what will happen. I was built to be here, to know this, but I was not built to have the want to interfere.
[WOW, NO PRESSURE, ASSHOLE. He can potentially save someone or help them out, but he doesn't know WHO or WHERE or WHEN??? God dammit x 2.] Fine. [He's quiet for a little bit while he thinks. Then:]
Is this injury set to occur during the week or Thursday night? Additionally, Thursday night: is it better to be outside or inside?
I want Pennyworth returned, too. Unharmed. I will put the letter on his collar.
[Briefly, he makes kind of a disgruntled face.]
You can keep Pennyworth with you if you don't think you can promise Pennyworth's safety on the outside. [Sorry about your own cat, bro.] But if someone else kills him, I will come for you.
Not sure yet. My cat ain't part of the game so unsure if it's associated with the game. It's a decision I'd have to make on my own, with no guidelines attached. Bit indecisive there.
But he didn't break a rule associated with the game, did he? He killed my cat. My cat that ain't part of anything to do with this game, just my own personal pleasure. What would I punish him for? That's like stealing my hat, nothing to do with the game at all.
I'm angry about it, but it ain't anything involved with the competition.

Does that mean you can change the past?

For you, Thursday, outside.

Understood. [A pause.] If I write a letter, is there a way for you to give it to the appropriate addressee in our universe after the game is over?
If no one comes out alive.

You've worked hard enough to earn that. I'll grant you it.

Do not let anyone touch my cat.

[ A raise of his eyebrow here. He doesn't respond for a moment but then -- ]
Ash killed my cat when he broke into my apartment. Your cat will be fine with you.

The human-hater? Why? Aren't you and he the same? Why would he kill your cat? [Bro, what did you do to him?]

[ fuck ash tbh ]

Unsurprising. He doesn't seem to have high regard for anything except toasters or microwaves.
[Damian frowns.] Do you plan to "punish" him?

[ He looks genuinely confused a that, eyebrows furrowing. ]
No. I just don't know what to do. Why would I be scared?

What do you mean you "don't know what to do"? You're the Sheriff! You've done everything else! [GOD!!!]
You could just keep him in one of the jail cells.

The animals here aren't involved in the competition just by being a part of this place?
