[ GRAVEYARD ]

GRAVEYARD

So, you're dead. Shame, that.

But on the other hand, it's actually kind of nice.

When you "wake" in some odd version of it, you'll find yourself lying on a rather plush bed. It's cozy and warm and just soft enough to tempt anyone back into sleep. The room is equally nice, if small, and when you turn and open the curtains to look out the window, you will see... wait, is that the town?

It is, actually. The town is laid out quite simply across the window and no matter how many times you may bang or wave through the window, no one seems to notice you. If you're smart enough to give up the venture and leave the small bedroom, you will notice that, of course, you are on the train.

The train that, is actually pretty fancy.

Moving through it, past the sleeping cabins and through to the main carts, you will find a dining car with fine dishware and meals of all kinds made at a push of a button or a request given to the air. They'll appear, freshly made and ready to eat at the table of your choice with any drink you could want. There truly doesn't seem to be any limits when it comes to the luxury of the meal.

There is also a bathhouse car with private bathrooms and saunas to fit up to four. Even one rather large room containing a small pool/hot tub of sorts is available for just about anyone to take a dip. It's kind of outlandish, honestly.

Then the lounge car, with its library and plush armchairs and couches. A pool table, a darts board, even a small area dedicated to painting. There's a bar too, fully stocked and ready for anyone who needs a drink. All it would require is a request from the bartender who... looks surprisingly familiar?

The Sheriff is there, much cleaner cut than his counterpart outside of the train. He looks up mildly at any arrivals, giving them a nod of greeting before going back to organizing bottles or setting cigars out for a smoke. He doesn't seem to be surprised at all by anyone who appears. Just... ready to serve them, whatever they may wish.

It all sort of seems okay for a moment, until you realize you're just here to wait for the game to end. Awkward.

[ Xion hums, a sweetly considering sound as she tilts her head. There's a little smile on her face as she adjusts the fall of her legs one after another, like she's still getting used to remembering she can use both. ]

What sort of things do you think you'll do, after you rescue her?

[ Glancing at him with bright eyes. Not when -- after, like it's a foregone conclusion that he'll get her back.

To Xion, of course, it already is. That's just how much she believes in him. ]

[In contrast to Xion's bright eyes, Shinnosuke's are dim, even as his pulse quickens at the idea. It almost makes him sick with anticipation, when he thinks of how close he is to his goal—or was, before this place dragged him here.]

I don't know.

[When saving her in itself was supposed to be an impossible goal, he hasn't been able to think much about what comes after. At any rate, he wasn't even supposed to be at this point in his goal this soon; things happened one after another, and he's ended up having to improvise.]

I don't even really know what face I should make when I see her again... [Considering the trash he's become, and all. Pensively:] There're a lot of other complications too. Realistically speaking, I'd probably be lucky to survive at all once I make it out of there...

[The world would never ignore that a diseased girl—let alone the one that spawned Apocalypse Alice—returned to normal. The likelihood that others would try and use his sister as a guinea pig afterwards isn't none, he figures. As for him... the world, likewise, wouldn't turn a blind eye to what he'd done. He can't imagine that the reaction will be a kind one; otherwise, why would Liezel be so eager to see it?

Well, won't it be delightful to find everyone surprised and disappointed when the puppet I'm controlling brings back a girl whom he severed from the labyrinth, without bringing back any magic from this place which the whole world is paying so much attention to?

If they're lucky, the other messes he needs to deal with will be forgotten in the above chaos.]

[ Honestly, doesn't that just sum them up. Light and darkness, hope and paranoia.

Xion watches him, all his carefully held in fear and refusal to hope, and shifts. Their arms are still linked; so she links their hands, too, finding his and threading their fingers together. ]

Smile. [ said soft. ] That's all you'll need to do. Until then... I know you'll fight. That's all we can do, isn't it? If there's anything I've learned from being here, it's that you have to fight, as hard as you can, and ... believe. I'm sure that ... no matter how much you pretend, you have people back home who care about you as much as we do. They'll support you, too, so you should let them, okay?

[ She can't help but think that Shinnosuke probably is the kind of person who ends up with friends anyway even when he claims so much he doesn't want them. ]

Maybe I don't know everything about what you'll face when you get home. But even if I knew all of it, I'd still ... [ -- ] there'll always be someone who believes in you. And besides ... I know you won't give up, anyway.

[He freezes, before forcing himself to relax. The idea that someone would hold his hand like this is... still foreign to him. It still feels too much like a gesture meant for someone else.

Is he really allowed to smile, though? He chose to let tens of thousands of people die when he was only seven. For the sake of his goal, he's abandoned people, killed them, and turned a blind eye to the corruption that ran rampant in the world. He condemned his cousin for her human experimentation, but he knows that he has no right to: he's not so different, when the main reason he returned to Japan was to test his incomplete Holy Sword switch on diseased girls.

(He remembers Asahi Momoka, who smiled at him and thanked him as he slit her neck.)

In the end, he's nothing more than a hypocrite. For him to smile upon reaching his sister... that would probably seem cruel to the world—that he can still smile, even after everything.

Like a villain pretending to be a hero.]

Those people are part of the problem...

[Gunjou is one of the issues that he's hoping will be forgotten in the chaos, but if she isn't, then he won't let the world forsake her. Because she's his friend, probably, and she's the only person back home whom he knows Xion's words apply to: no matter what, she'll help him, and so he has to help her. With that said, he has no idea how.

And Shiro and the others are another story—all the more as Xion speaks, as it reignites how much he wants to believe in them. He can't let that faith blind him, however. No matter how much he might like them as people, he doesn't know which faction they belong to. Even if they support him, their organization may still be his enemy, which in turn makes them the same.

He'll have to tell them, sometime. He can only hope (ha) that when that time comes, he won't find himself with a knife in his back.

Or, if necessary, that he'll be able to strike Shiro down.]

Unfortunately, just a few people won't be able to fight against the world themselves. [...] But you're right in that giving up isn't an option.
