GRAVEYARD

So, you're dead. Shame, that.

But on the other hand, it's actually kind of nice.

When you "wake" in some odd version of it, you'll find yourself lying on a rather plush bed. It's cozy and warm and just soft enough to tempt anyone back into sleep. The room is equally nice, if small, and when you turn and open the curtains to look out the window, you will see... wait, is that the town?

It is, actually. The town is laid out quite simply across the window and no matter how many times you may bang or wave through the window, no one seems to notice you. If you're smart enough to give up the venture and leave the small bedroom, you will notice that, of course, you are on the train.

The train that, is actually pretty fancy.

Moving through it, past the sleeping cabins and through to the main carts, you will find a dining car with fine dishware and meals of all kinds made at a push of a button or a request given to the air. They'll appear, freshly made and ready to eat at the table of your choice with any drink you could want. There truly doesn't seem to be any limits when it comes to the luxury of the meal.

There is also a bathhouse car with private bathrooms and saunas to fit up to four. Even one rather large room containing a small pool/hot tub of sorts is available for just about anyone to take a dip. It's kind of outlandish, honestly.

Then the lounge car, with its library and plush armchairs and couches. A pool table, a darts board, even a small area dedicated to painting. There's a bar too, fully stocked and ready for anyone who needs a drink. All it would require is a request from the bartender who... looks surprisingly familiar?

The Sheriff is there, much cleaner cut than his counterpart outside of the train. He looks up mildly at any arrivals, giving them a nod of greeting before going back to organizing bottles or setting cigars out for a smoke. He doesn't seem to be surprised at all by anyone who appears. Just... ready to serve them, whatever they may wish.

It all sort of seems okay for a moment, until you realize you're just here to wait for the game to end. Awkward.

No, I think he'll hate me because I told him I didn't kill Hannibal, kissed him, and promised him everything was going to be alright when I already knew exactly what was going to happen to me, and I'm pretty sure he believed me.

[She sighs.]

I'm an asshole.

[ In the course of her - not very long, admittedly - teaching career, Sara had already expected a few things to come from educating a motley crew of students. Gripes over homework and assignments, foolhardy blustering (which she'd had no qualms with cheerily beating down), some insecurities about their growth while learning what their country needed, and matters of the heart. The 'ooh la la' she liked to tease them about. Thankfully (and boringly), they so rarely needed her advice.

But here she is, sitting here with a girl who is explaining that she killed a man and kissed a guy and lied about killing the man while also knowing that the man's boyfriend-husband-soulmate-dining buddy was going to come after her and it wasn't going to be pretty.

And advice coming from a woman who kissed a man who was grieving over the death of a child she'd killed--

Did gods laugh? She has to wonder if Aidios is laughing right now. ]

Assholes don't usually admit they're assholes, or if they do, they do it with a hell of a lot more pride.

[ ... ]

I think he'll be hurt, and upset, and angry. I think he'll probably feel betrayed and probably punch a wall or two, knowing him. But I also think there's no way he can look at you and hate you, Natalie. Whatever you've gone through here, he's been here for a lot of it, right? That doesn't just disappear.

[She's quiet for a long moment at that, turning it over and over in her head.]

...If you watched the trial, did he explain what my role was, and what I did?

[It might seem out of left field, but she's leading up to something.]
alcobrawlic: (I might actually regret this)

Hal did that-- your role, and what that meant.

[ Jason had a bad time. ]

[Another pause, though this one is smaller, as she stares at the table.]

He was the first person I told. After I picked the deer because Hal made me think it was just one deer, when Seizaburo...

[She skips over the details on that one. She's sure Sara knows.]

Since I'd explained it to him, he realized I was probably freaking out about it, I guess. He basically tore the town apart looking for me, I think, because I was all the way at the lake by the time he found me. I was kind of a mess, and he stayed with me all night to make sure I wouldn't do anything stupid. He kept telling me to stop apologizing, that it wasn't my fault, that he cared about me and that he wasn't angry.

[That's the kind of person he is, she thinks. The kind who made her natural fear of trusting anyone seem so pointless after a short time, who she could always depend on no matter what happened.

And this is how she repaid him. She exhales on a sigh, shaking her head.]

Sorry. It just - I don't know, it sucks. [A humorless laugh.] You probably understand how much it sucks, huh?

[Horrible timing pals.]

[ She's honestly pretty sure Natalie didn't just summon an entire herd - horde - of deer and then throw a dog in there so Sei would come charging in to try and save him and also that Damian would also fling himself into it and then she and Jason would have to haul him off to the clinic--

But no one would have been able to get that across better than Jason anyway, and she's sure Natalie already knows by now that it wasn't her fault.

What she can address is the here and now, and she does with a sigh of her own. ]

You don't need to apologize. I completely understand how much it sucks. We get shoved into these roles where we don't have a choice and we try to minimize the damage but in the end, we still end up hurting the people we didn't want to hurt at all.
