The message comes by carrier pigeon actually, which is a pretty weird way to deliver a message but of course, it's thematic. A very pretty looking brown pigeon swoops down out of the sky to wherever Noctis just so happens to be that afternoon and holds out its leg. The message is short and simple:
Got a job for you. Meet me at the farm at dusk. No show, no job. Keep it a secret, rewarded very well.
- Hal
P.S. Burn this.
And that's it. Of course, if Noctis chooses to listen to the message, he will find the Sheriff at the farm at dusk, chewing a piece of tobacco and watching the sun set. He'll be greeted with a tip of his hat and one word:
"Bounty."
And then he holds out a small notebook. Looks like Noctis's been chosen for one of those roles that were mentioned. Good luck.
[of course, he's going to check it out. not because he's really interested in complying with any of this bullshit, but because he wants to know what it's all about.
he also doesn't burn the message, pocketing it instead—he'll wait on that until after he knows what this is about. and sure enough noct will show up when he's asked to, giving a wary eye to that greeting..
[ He's just gonna snort here before spitting out his tobacco. He'll be digging into his pocket to pull out another piece, gesturing for Noctis to talk with a hand. ]
[ Just a spreading of his hands in an entirely innocent gesture. ]
Didn't say the role was to protect you. Just gotta give you a challenge. You're more than welcome to do nothing with your role and just focus on the game at hand, if that's what you're comfortable with.
[ And yet the Sheriff continues as nonchalant as usual. ]
Yeah. Probably cut your tongue and fingers first till I can have you killed proper. Seems like a lot of effort just for some show of pride though. Why don't you just play?
I gotta know what I'm up against before I start agreeing.
[he never said he wouldn't? though how willing that is, that's another matter entirely.] Doesn't change the fact that your game sucks, just so you know.
[he's got his own motives, though. even being compliant will definitely be for his own reasons and not the sheriff's. minor details.]
So the whole point of this Bounty business. [well, maybe not the entire reason, but what he's focused on right now.] Find the others without getting caught. That's... what I'm supposed to be doing right now?
Been doing pretty well already. Pretty sure I've made more friends in the last week than you.
[thanks for the faith in him, asshole. he can swallow that wooden dick instead, that'd be more ideal.
but anyway, more importantly.]
Am I supposed to be looking for some kind of secret signal or somethin'? Seems like a good way to get nothing done if there's not even a clue to go on. [then again, the sheriff wants to see them all kill each other anyway, so he's not sure what he's bothering with this for.]
Leader has clues. Already asked for one. You don't though, maybe you should just, let's see, use your instincts? You got any of those? A brain, maybe? It's a god damn puzzle, why the hell are you so confused about it?
Probably because it's less of a puzzle and more throwing us to the wolves. Up the river without a paddle when you go "blindly try to find some people secretly in a group of 40."
[what the hell kind of instincts does he think exist for this?]
