The message comes by carrier pigeon actually, which is a pretty weird way to deliver a message but of course, it's thematic. A very pretty looking brown pigeon swoops down out of the sky to wherever Hannibal just so happens to be that afternoon and holds out its leg. The message is short and simple:
Got a job for you. Meet me in front of the sheriff station at dusk. No show, no job. Keep it a secret, rewarded very well.
- Hal
P.S. Burn this.
And that's it. Of course, if Hannibal chooses to listen to the message, he will find the Sheriff in front of the station at dusk. He'll be greeted with a tip of his hat and one word:
"Deputy."
And then he holds out a small notebook. Looks like Hannibal's been chosen for one of those roles that were mentioned. Good luck.
[ That genuinely surprises Hannibal, and it's enough to give him a brief pause. He looks mildly impressed, but he ends up shrugging. ]
That's very inconvenient for them.
[ He says it simply, though in his casual tone, it's clear that he doesn't hold that same standard at all. He's goading them at this point, because sending a handwritten note back was nothing less than baiting them. They didn't have to have seen his handwriting to guess that it was him. It fits his personality so well that he thinks it's obvious. ]
One of 'em is thinking about just killing you on their own, figure the rest out from there. The others are considering trying to get you to work with them to end the game without death.
[ Hannibal nods understandingly, since the first is what he would have hoped, but the second gets his smile to be a bit more wry. He considers it, but asks a simple question in response. ]
How would your employers feel about the second option?
[ Hannibal makes a small, thoughtful noise in response. It's clear he's surprised, but he doesn't elaborate on whether he'd be willing or interested in cooperating or not. He doesn't personally find the idea of a peaceful resolution very entertaining, though. ]
Then I suppose I'll see how the week goes. If they find both equally enjoyable, then it doesn't matter to me too much one way or another.
[ Other than his preference for violence, but. With that point settled, he'll just give his pick for the stocks easily. ]
[ He nods, satisfied with that, and for a moment, he thinks that's probably all he needs to say or do tonight. However, a whim strikes him, and he smiles slightly. ]
If I do die— Would it be possible for me to give what merit I've earned and not used to someone else?
[ He shrugs, since that caveat doesn't bother him much. It's not as if he would be using it, and giving the rest at all is only to give the recipient a conflict. It's what Hannibal has been presenting him the entire time they've been talking to each other, so he'd like to leave a last question of Hannibal's intentions as a parting gift. ]
I'm not surprised. He's a busy young man. Truthfully, it's only his lack of caution that makes me certain that he's not their leader.
[ But Hannibal certainly seems to think that Percy is one of the Bounties. If not them, then he at least feels that he has a role, though he's not particularly bothered by that. After all, Percy had freely given him information. Far too much, in fact, and that, in itself, was delightful. ]
If that's too cliche, you could also give it to whoever kills me. Either would be acceptable.
[ Completely unsurprisingly, he looks nothing less than pleased at the statement. He can embrace his own end easily, since it wasn't as if it came as any surprise, but the fact that hers (who, he wonders, though he does have an idea) would follow so soon after is delightful. He smiles easily and nods. ]
Excellent. He may actually use it, so it may as well go to him.

What do they plan to do, then?

[ And then he considers, sighing. ]

No preference. Both are equally enjoyable.

Damian for the stocks this week.

Is this because he asked you to strip?
[ Look, he's getting it. ]
no subject
Not that exactly, no. I had no problem with doing so. But considering his age, his insistence was quite rude.
no subject
[ A shrug. ]
You got it, Hannibal.

It would count as a reward you're claiming.

I'd like for Percy to have the rest.

That puts him at the top in terms of worth of this town, you know.

[ He considers that too, already knowing how Hannibal will find his end. Hm. ]
... I could, but it would be a waste since she won't live through it. No, I'll give it to Percy.

Excellent. He may actually use it, so it may as well go to him.

Yeah. Anything else?
no subject
No, that should do.
[ Though after a moment's consideration, he at least adds politely: ]
Thank you, though. I doubt anyone else holds the same opinion, but I found all of this quite enjoyable.
no subject
Well, yeah. That was the point of picking you for this role, I suppose.

I'm sure there would have been other amusing choices, though. I am simply the most willing to comply.
