screams softly about hannibal lecter and then increasingly grows louder tbh

we've talked about this a lot christy but it will never cease to amaze me HOW MUCH hannibal actually impacted percy's path in the game and what he was doing and I never realized the extent until their last conversation when hannibal told him, like, why he put annabeth in the stocks or what he was doing and etc.

so the beginning. at the beginning he thought hannibal was a nice and kind of weirdly pretentious dude but somehow he managed to gain percy's respect. even NOW he still calls him dr. lecter and considering that percy likes to throw names around like they mean nothing the fact that hannibal is one of two people he respects enough to give a title is very impressive (the other being barnham, refusing to call him anything but "mr. barnham.") he thought hannibal was a man who didn't quite belong in a place like this and he thought he was polite without being too overbearing and that was something percy appreciated.

like with will, percy's favorite thing about hannibal at the time was that he was honest with him and upfront about things. he didn't hide things from him when percy asked the right questions and even gave him more information than he initially asked for, which was really what solidified his alliance with hannibal. he also really, really liked will and so he made it an effort to get to know hannibal better and he came to find he enjoyed talking to the man, too. he never even really realized just how much he was telling hannibal about himself but the nice thing is that the man never made him feel weird or awkward or ashamed of the thoughts he had. it did a lot for his mental state to have someone to talk about these things out loud even if hannibal was sort of encouraging them without saying so. thanks vore dad. he trusted hannibal's opinion on things because it was the opinion nobody else was giving him. that mattered SO MUCH in how percy was playing the game and the choices he made.

when will told him the truth about hannibal obviously the first reaction was anger and disgust that he was, essentially, hurting will (in percy's mind anyway) and also a bunch of people and he was hyper-aggressive in wanting to protect damian and the other bounties. however, because of his relationship with hannibal he took will's advice and approached him simply to talk and even now he wonders if there's a way they could have all worked together before the end. knowing that everybody needed to die to end the game has settled him on the fact that things worked out the way they should, but it's hard to let go. he's never had a really polite and easy conversation with a monster before and he finds it to be very, very interesting to him.

like in his conversations with will, he can see a lot of himself and annabeth in hannibal and will only without the murderous cannibal tendencies. he recognizes love in the actions but he can never justify them and he still hopes that maybe they'll stop hurting people for a while as long as they have each other. despite the fact that they ruined the lives of so many people he loves and cares about it's still hard for him to ignore the fact that hannibal especially did help him a lot. hannibal gave him tools to win and everything he said in his last letter still stands. he chose to keep his memories specifically so that he'd remember what hannibal taught him, but moreso as a reminder to never become like him.

hannibal has left him very confused and angry and perplexed, but he can't bring himself to flat-out hate him. so that's fucked up. but he knows things will never be the same. hannibal is just another monster and percy is willing to accept that. doesn't mean he won't do his best to keep him away from his friends but he himself has zero problems approaching him time and time again because he recognizes that there's a different kind of friendship there.

percy jackson sometimes makes stupid life choices, but it really would be the stupidest of all to ignore hannibal after everything. so that's about where he stands. whoops
