who's gonna get asskicked here is what i wanna know
RUSSELL.... god Barnham wasn't even supposed to get attached to Russell but then it Happened Anyway... he took a little bit of an interest in Russell when Russell didn't seem to know how to act. It wasn't a malicious lack of understanding to Barnham; it seemed as though Russell legitimately had no idea how to feel anything??? So he decided to poke his nose into things and see what was going on.
See... Barnham actually really likes kids. He's softhearted to the people who need protecting the most, and he wanted to see what was going on with Russell and if he could help. What he uncovered was a lot more pain than he was entirely ready for, but it just convinced him that Russell needed support. The more he heard about how sad Russell's life was, the more he wanted to defend him and protect him.
And most of all, he wanted to teach him to hope. All of the other emotions, he felt, would come in time. But hope... hope was one thing Russell needed most of all. Hope for the future. hope for something to live for, just hope, and Barnham wanted to give him that no matter what. He was attached to Russell--but not just...the Russell of then, if that makes sense, but the Russell that could be if he learned to feel for himself.
And then Russell died. Barnham was pretty torn up about it, honestly. Russell was his roommate, and someone who he was directly trying to influence into wanting to live, and then he was killed. He was wondering if he did the right thing in trying to make Russell care--if it would have been better if he didn't. There was a lot he wasn't sure about...
Because it might've been easier on Russell if he hadn't wanted to live, when it came time to die.
But in the end he can't regret it. Russell deserves a better life than he had, and that's something Barnham believes fully. He wanted to take care of him and still does; he'll do whatever he can to make sure that he's able to live a proper life now. That letter that Russell sent--I've already told Kia this, but Barnham kept it in a breast pocket to make sure he had it near him at all times throughout the end of the game, and it helped keep him going. He was grateful for that too.
And he feels, now that he's seen Russell again on the train, that he's finally starting to see the "Russell that could be". Russell learning to think and feel for himself, Russell learning to embrace his new life...and he's fond of this Russell, very much so. He'll be Russell's dad for as long as Russell allows him--and this time, he'll properly protect him.
