Ash was really interested in speaking to her once he learned she was a non-human; his world is composed only of humans, practically speaking, so he's been on his own his entire life. I mentioned it in my response to Noctis, but Ash's attitude essentially stems from his feeling like he's loathed by the entire world - he's lonely and feels rejected and he hates it. Being hated by humans is a simple fact of life to him, and he assumes that any he meets will feel that way. Obviously, the same doesn't hold true for beings like spirits, who he has no experience with. So when he met Milla, he was hoping (unconsciously) that she would be a being that he might get along with. This hope only intensified after hearing about her story and how much it fell in line with his beliefs about humans - as well as his own world's history.
Even after it became obvious that she had a very different outlook on humanity than he did, he clung to that hope for some time, trying to become her ally. Much like Milla wanted to change his outlook on people for the better, he was hoping to do the opposite to her - though in his mind, he would be opening her eyes to reality. Unfortunately, Ash isn't the most optimistic guy in the world, and he's self-loathing to boot. As time went on, it became clear that Milla wouldn't budge on her position, and he was quick to assume that meant she was so different from him that they could never get along - that she'd side with the humans against him when given the choice and become just another member of the legions of people who hated him. It was bad enough that he assumed Milla was going to kill him after speaking with her about people who later became victims.
This feeling hasn't changed, despite her not calling him out and Noctis's fondness for her. He's already relegated her to the enemy pile, and getting herself out would take some work... paranoia and hatefulness win again. sorry milla... he'll still share noct with you though
