anyway god. okay. remember just before you tagged me with the diary link and you were like "time to test how shounen yuna really is"?? yeah. like yuna's best friend tries to literally murder god and destroy the universe in the process because god is fucking with yuna and co., and yuna goes "but what about all of the people who aren't magical girls and don't know about this??" and she basically just goes "FUCK 'EM." SO LIKE...YOU HAVE TO TRY REALLY HARD TO LOSE YUNA'S APPROVAL. YOU'VE REALLY GOTTA MAKE AN EFFORT AND EVEN THAT ISN'T ENOUGH SOMETIMES YOU'VE SEEN SHINNOSUKE. YOU'RE HERE
but like...from the very start yuna was just sort of under the impression that russell was lonely and kind of emotionally incompetent, and from the very start yuna was 100000% about the idea that working together and taking care of each other was what was going to get everyone through this whole murdergame kidnapping situation! and russell was a part of "everyone" but she especially wanted to befriend him because he was a distant lonely-seeming kid around her age who she felt just needed some friends, and she was ready to be that friend!! she hauled him into the hero club because just that mild bit of interest was enough for her to think it would be good for him to have something to work hard for but it'd be a good way to make him socialize and be friendly!! she was so determined to make this boy have feelings.
obviously this kind of came to a head over the course of week five! yuna's instinct in all cases is to help people, it's what she genuinely feels best doing, so russell was sad and stressed and yuna was just like, this is!! my friend!!! gotta help the friend GOTTA HELP THE BUDDY and her specialties include putting her own problems on the backburner all the time so like, man, whatever, who cares about coyote maulings. who gives a shit. that's not gonna stop her from worrying about russell's problems instead?!?! so she kept reaching out to him and kept trying to help him out because even though she didn't fully understand the situation with the happy dream drug and the homicide, she saw that he was scared and stressed and sad and so she worked hard to help him! yuna's like, so intensely sincere about everything she does; she really genuinely wanted him to be okay
so after all that, after he'd had such a rough week and after seeing him so scared in the stocks, of course she had to make yet another bad sleepover decision? she loved russell, she couldn't just leave him all alone!! and she fucked it up and died and she completely, entirely blames herself for that. helping her friends really is yuna's number one priority so uselessness and being a burden are the worst things for her, so even though she wanted to help russell, she couldn't protect him at all, all she did was scare and upset him and he was killed because she wasn't strong enough to protect him
this didn't change at all even after yuna was given the diary. she's good at reading people and she's really good at finding the best in people; she'll forgive a lot if it wasn't done on pure malice. togo tried to fucking destroy the entire world but it was because she wanted to protect her friends from a lifetime of suffering; fu ran off and tried to 1v1 the entire government with a sword but it was because they'd put her sister in danger and she'd gotten hurt as a result so of course fu was angry. yuna doesn't really do anger herself because she's so forgiving and full of joy, but she did get pretty gosh dang mad on russell's behalf over the situation with annabeth: she saw russell as someone who needed help and needed the support system to do and be better, because she saw that he wanted to, so she was so mad that the sheriff took advantage of him lacking those things by telling him to kill, and a lot of people ended up hurt because of the fallout and russell unfairly ended up with undeserved blame for it. even all the previous murders in his diary—yuna saw all of that but she saw that russell had been raised without any love and in such a broken home, but he wanted to make things right, he wanted to do better, he knew it was wrong, and so she forgave him, she promised to stay with him, she was completely ready to just haul him the fuck to sanshu if he didn't have somewhere better to be (and she's so happy he gets to go home with sara) because she fully believes strength comes from friendship and russell just needed the love and support to have the strength to do good
SO. SHE LOVES HIM. she will captain the russell defense squad. she wants him to be the best russell he can be because she knows that's what he wants for himself too!! and she wants to do everything she possibly can to help him get there because it can't be done alone. she's basically never going to ever stop beating herself up for what she sees as failing him by getting herself killed, even if she doesn't feel like she can apologize for it because if she does he'll probably want to defend her and he's already apologized enough for things she doesn't blame him for, but she wants to do better by him so long as he's giving her another chance, too
anyway they're going to be pen pals and she's going to send him so many letters with cute doodles and pictures of the hero club and pressed flowers and candy and friendship bracelets and she's going to keep asking sara how he's doing too and??? she loves him. she loves this boy with her whole heart and soul
